Security Surveys
A security survey is "a critical on-site examination and analysis
of a home,... or business to ascertain the present security status, to
identify weaknesses or excesses, to determine the protection needed,
and to make recommendations to improve the overall security."
The time required to complete the survey varies based on the site
to be surveyed and the security desires of the occupant, e.g., a
residence as opposed to a business or commercial establishment; the
protection of property as opposed to protection of lives. After the
site survey is completed, a narrative report is compiled which
describes the location surveyed, noting security strengths and
weaknesses. The completed survey contains recommendations to improve
security or to maintain the present conditions. Topics covered in a
survey include; examination of doors, locks, windows, lighting,
alarms, and landscaping; examination of security procedures; and
safety tips.
Surveys are scheduled on a first-come basis. As a general
guideline, for every hour the crime prevention officer spends
conducting the survey, he will spend approximately three to four hours
preparing the narrative report. A copy of the report will be provided
to the homeowner or proprietor and all surveys are confidential.
