School Resource Officer
In a rapidly growing and ever changing community, the role of
police in the community has become increasingly important. Today,
crime and violence in our schools is a major concern to educators and
parents, as well as students. With the increasing population of
schools today, law enforcement and school districts have found it
beneficial to team up and the development of the School Resource
Officer Program was conceived.
The first example of school based law enforcement was in the late
1950’s in Flint, Michigan. Officers were introduced into the schools
on a part-time basis. The overall goal was to improve the relationship
between youth and police. The program was considered a success and has
evolved into a program that service thousands of school districts
nationwide.
Some of the goals of the School Resource Officer are:
- To bridge the gap between law enforcement and our youth
- Provide students with access to the legal system
- To promote a safe learning environment
- Teach students crime prevention and education
- Address law enforcement related issues that take place
The Northville Township Police Department has one officer that is
currently assigned to the Northville High School. Detective

and attends many school functions.
