Hillside Middle School Makers’ Club

Is your child always tinkering with items around the house? Do they like to use their creativity by building and making things? If so, the Maker’s Club might be the place for them!

NYN has partnered with Hillside Middle School to offer a Makers’ Club, with the goal of building confidence in youth by fostering peer connections in an encouraging and creative space as they design, tinker, code, craft, build, and make. We want to empower youth to take risks as they learn by doing and partner with others to problem-solve and practice decision-making skills. Makers’ Club is a great place for those youth who may not have the skills for or interest in existing academic clubs (e.g. Science Olympiad, Academic Games) and/or athletic programs but still love to roll up their sleeves and create!

Makers’ Club is open to all Hillside Middle School students and meets weekly after school in the school building during the academic year. For more information about Makers’ Club contact Mrs. Harris, Hillside science teacher at harrisje@northvilleschools.org.

Meads Mill Middle School Peer-2-Peer

The transition from elementary to middle school is a big deal! Many young students can benefit from the guiding force from someone who’s recently “been there done that”. The Meads Mill Middle School Peer-2-Peer program consists of a group of 8th graders, many who were in the program themselves as 6th graders, trained to assist the younger students to acclimate to the middle school experience by showing them the ropes and being a positive role model.

Cross-age peer programs like Peer-2Peer provide growth and learning opportunities for both mentors and mentees, resulting in a “double impact”. This experience provides the 6th grade mentees with the opportunity to find support along with friendship development, reinforcing positive behavior, and a constructive example to emulate. The 8th grade mentors cultivate their leadership skills, increase their own self-awareness and personal growth, and improve their communication and interpersonal skills.

Peer-2-Peer is open to all Meads Mill Middle School students in 6th and 8th grades. The program meets weekly after school in the school building during the academic year. For more information about Peer-2-Peer contact Mrs. Bilbie-Bekius, Meads Mill counselor at bilbiekr@northvilleschools.org
