The NYN Youth Assistance Program provides support to youth that reside within the Northville Public School district boundaries. Referrals can be made by school personnel for behavioral issues that occur during the school day or law enforcement officers for certain offences that occur within the community.
The Youth Assistance Program It is an individualized, needs-based support program that maximizes the youth’s strengths to equip them to make successful choices in the future. The program guides youth as they explore their choices and behaviors in an encouraging and supportive environment in an effort to reinforce healthy and positive behaviors.
Once a referral has been made by school personnel or a law enforcement agency, parents/caregivers will be contacted by NYN to set up an intake session at which they will have an opportunity to learn more about the nature and scope of the program. The youth’s infraction and individual needs will be assessed to determine the best and healthiest course of action. Together, with the youth and parent/caregiver, we will develop an Individual Support Plan that will be designed to best support the youth and equip them for success in the future.
An Individual Support Plan May Include Some of the Following Activities
- Attendance at Teen Talk, a group program that meets weekly for four weeks. The topics covered in this interactive peer program include the following and others:
- Exploring values
- Decision Making
- Impact of consequences on self and others
- Goal setting and future plans
- Communication skills
- Self-esteem and peer pressure
- Short-term one-on-one sessions with NYA staff to equip and empower the student for future success
- Attendance at a Drug/Alcohol/Vape education and awareness seminar
- Monthly check-ins (by phone or in-person) for up to six months following completion of Individual Support Plan.
- Community service hours in the community
A benefit of successful completion of the Individual Support Plan is that youth may be granted a reduced school suspension or be diverted from court appearances and the judicial process as a result of their offenses.
Participation in the NYA Community Support Program is voluntary. Should parents/guardians decide not to have their child participate they will be referred back to the referring school personnel or law enforcement agency for follow-up.
