If an individual wish to purchase a handgun from a private party, or if they receive a firearm as a gift, or from a Will or Estate, then a License to Purchase a Pistol (LTP) is required per MCL 28.422. Individuals do not require a license if the sale is from a FFL dealer (gun shop) or if they are a CPL holder.

In order to apply for a LTP, a Northville Township resident may set up an appointment with the records bureau. Valid identification is mandatory. A background check is conducted, and if the individual does not have any disqualifiers, a license will be issued. The process typically takes a half hour to complete. Once the LTP is used, it is returned back to the Township records bureau for registry into the MSP Firearms database.

If an handgun was purchased from a business or individual with a Federal Firearm License (FFL), the Pistol Sales Record can be dropped off or mailed to the police department 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

CPL- Concealed Pistol Licenses are processed by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Information on how to obtain one can be found the Michigan State Police.
