SUMMARY
This part-time position plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of children and pedestrians around Northville Community schools. All Northville Township Crossing Guards receive training consistent with Michigan Law to help enact proven methods for children to safety cross intersections and to work with law enforcement to identify violators. The primary purpose of a crossing guard is to assist students an other pedestrians in safely crossing the street near a school.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position works under the general supervision of the Detective Sergeant.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties: (These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform.)
- Enhance the safety of pedestrians, especially students, as they cross roads and intersections near schools.Particular attention is paid during peak school arrival and dismissal times.
- Manage traffic flow and control vehicles to allow safe passage for pedestrians.May use stop signs, hand signals, or other means to direct both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
- Provide a visible and authoritative presence to help reduce the risk of accidents and promote a safe environment for students and other pedestrians.
- Foster a sense of trust and familiarity among parents, students, and drivers by becoming a recognizable face in the community contributing to overall safety awareness.
- Trained to react quickly and appropriately to ensure the safety of pedestrians.
- Communicate with drivers, pedestrians, and school staff to coordinate safe crossing procedures and address any concerns related to traffic safety.
- May play an educational role by promoting awareness of traffic safety rules among students and encouraging safe behavior when crossing streets.
- Adheres to the Township’s Mission, Vision, and Values through excellent customer service, creative problem solving and decision making, and stewardship of Township resources.
- Perform related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES FOR EMPLOYMENT
All of the following KSA’s are essential. An employee in this class, upon appointment, should have the equivalent to the following:
Knowledge of basic traffic patterns and laws concerning safe vehicle operation.
Excellent communication skills including active listening.
Ability to read written instructions.
Ability to resolve customer problems and concerns.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION FOR EMPLOYMENT
High School graduate or equivalent with minimal customer service experience preferred.
