The Northville Township “Beautification Commission” was established by Resolution on December 9, 1982. The purpose of the Commission is to preserve and enhance the beauty of the Township of Northville through public education and informational programs. The volunteers on the Commission do this through recognition of outstanding beautification efforts of private and public facilities and businesses, the coordination of plantings in public spaces, and programs that encourage the conservation of the environment, tree planting, anti-littering campaigns and the implementation of green initiatives.

Membership in the Beautification Commission consists of a minimum of seven and up to 18 members appointed by the Township Supervisor, with approval of the Board of Trustees. Meetings are held once monthly (no meeting in January, February, November and December). Currently, there are several vacancies on the Beautification Commission and interested individuals are encouraged to apply.

Letter to Businesses - June 2024

Dear Northville Township Community Member,

The Beautification Commission of the Charter Township of Northville wishes to notify you of the upcoming judging for the 35th Annual Beautification Awards. The judging will take place mid-June to early July 2024. If you wish to submit your own photos, please do so at northvilletwpbeautification@gmail.com – deadline to submit is July 10th.
Every year, the Beautification Commission members encourage local businesses to go above and beyond the required landscape ordinances of Northville Township. We encourage you to enhance your place of business by planting extra flowers, adding window boxes or flowerpots and by keeping your landscape pruned and weeded.  The judging takes into consideration all of the landscaping including the addition of flowers, overall cleanliness and general appearance of the property.  For the businesses lacking any ground area to plant flowers, container gardens or planters are considered and included in the judging.  Please refer to the enclosed Judging Criteria List for guidance.

The Township will award a “Best In Township Award” and a “Corporate Pride Award” to two businesses that the Commission feels have gone above and beyond in creating stunning landscapes.  The Beautification Commission is very appreciative of all efforts to make the community beautiful.

Awards will be presented at a luncheon to be held in the fall. The winners will be notified by an “invitation” letter delivered by Beautification members, or via U.S. mail.

We look forward to recognizing our 2024 Beautification Award Recipients.
Sincerely,

Charter Township of Northville
Northville Township Beautification Commission
Lynne Mosteller, Chairperson

Commission Highlights

The Commission is active and busy and the following are highlights of the programs and initiatives the Commission oversees:

Friendship Garden

Located at the corner of Six Mile and Sheldon roads, in front of Township Hall. Originally planned as a “Hosta” garden, it continues to grow and develop. There is a pathway leading to a park bench for residents to stop and enjoy the garden.

Arbor Day Seedling Giveaway

Depending upon the weather, usually in April or early May in odd years (the next one: 2025), the Township Commission partners with the City of Northville’s Beautification Commission to host the Seedling Giveaway. The Commission provides free quality seedlings to residents in the Northville Public School District. The date frequently coincides with Earth Day or Arbor Day. It's a drive-thru event. Guests drive up, place an order and the seedlings are brought to the car.

Restoration of the Living Walls of the Bennett Arboretum Pathway

In 2019 the Beautification Commission became involved in the restoration of the northern section of this pathway to remove invasive species and restore the beauty of the 8100 square feet of 'living' brick wall. After many hours of hard work from Beautification volunteers, the restoration is nearly complete. The Beautification Commission has a plan in place to maintain the existing plantings for years to come.
