Northville Township, MI
Home MenuLegacy Park Property Acquisition History
Northville Township is the proud owner of Legacy Park, a.k.a. the Seven Mile property and former state psychiatric hospital site. We purchased it from developer Schostak Brothers & Co. and its partner REI Investment Group Inc. (REIS), after residents voted to acquire it. REIS still owns the 82-acre development at the southwest corner of Seven Mile and Haggerty roads.
Northville Township took ownership of the property for approximately $23.5 million as a result of a successful millage election in 2009. At the time, there were 20 deteriorating buildings, a water tower, related utility tunnels and roads on the 350-acre site.
The goal of the land purchase was to provide recreational opportunities to Township residents and to preserve a unique piece of nature within our community. Officials recognized cleaning up the property would be a lengthy process because of the number of buildings needing remediation of hazardous materials and asbestos combined with the high cost to remove them.
With the assistance of 3,000 residents, it crafted a master plan for the Seven Mile property, which the Board of Trustees adopted Jan. 26, 2012. While recreation needs were different then, it mapped out a 30- to 50-year process of phased development. Its top goals were to reinforce a “sense of community,” to have 85% passive recreation and to avoid anything trendy, getting better with age to make the community proud. This beautiful recreation gem is getting closer to fruition.
